New To DVD:From Hawthorne To Family Guy

June 24th, 2010

Okay, I just wanted to inform people about what is new to DVD today. If you are looking to add to your DVD collection or just want to find out what’s coming out , here you go. There are a variety of DVDs listed here from movies to television shows. Choose what you like

American Dad has finally made it to a season 2. So why not purchase it? It’s from the mind of Seth MacFarlane the one who brought you Family Guy and The Cleveland Show. All are projects that are shown on Fox and for the most part Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. If it was good enough to make it to season 2 it is definitely good enough to own. Also Family Guy is being released in its eighth season. If you are a collector of great animated shows that are filled with social commentary, these are good shows for you. Also both American Dad and Family Guy are unrated, so it is filled with ridiculousness that could not be shown on TV. A must to check out.

Hawthorne the complete first season is also being released. Jada Pinkett Smith made it through her first season with a hard outer shell and soft yet maternal side inertly inside of her. This RN is ready and in store for many more season, hopefully.

As far as movies coming to DVD there is the Book of Eli and Youth in Revolt, both rated R movies. Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington in this “apocalyptic” type world claiming to be on a mission from God. And then there is Youth in Revolt, the traditional tale of guy trying to win the heart of girl, with the twist that he has created an alter ego to be a bad boy.

That’s it for what’s coming out to DVDs this week. Just click below, you can get them from Amazon. Make sure you get them before they run out of supplies, if you want them added to your DVD collection.

If you are a big fan of Seth MacFarlane’s work click here to get them from Amazon. Also if you want to check out more about reviews and advice about what movies are out click here.

How Movie Formats Have Changed.

March 30th, 2010

If you hear the term “Home Video” what is the first thing that comes to mind? For most of us, it’s the term “DVD” or “DVD Video.” That should tell you just how deeply rooted the DVD has become in our lives and our culture. It is actually tough to remember when we watched videos on VHS tape, however it wasn’t that long ago. The truth is, as time moves on the DVD itself is becoming outdated and one day soon you might consider it just as much as a distant memory as you consider the VHS tape a gone distant memory.

As everything, home video went through a little bit of an evolution. VHS and Beta video cassettes were the first warriors in the format war for market supremacy, the winner finally being the VHS tape. However, after nearly 2 decades of unchallenged domination, the market was growing to the stage that an advancement in quality was needed to keep pace with consumer demand for an improvement in audio and video content. The DVD was an excellent low cost fix for the problem and in 1997 began commercial distribution, but it wasn’t until 1999 that it really caught on. However, it’s standing as the video format of choice wouldn’t last that long as it was not able to display true high definition content of its own.

By 2000, companies began desperately researching an alternative media format that would provide them as well as the consumer with what they wanted. An affordable, user-friendly, high storage media platform that could hold enough information for hours of high definition audio and video along with extra “bonus” material as desired. Toshiba reached the customer first using their HD DVD disc, and delivered behind it with major manufacturer support. It offered the very best quality content along with enough storage space for bonus features and extras as studios saw fit. Back then, it was as evolutionary as the DVD was to the VHS tape.

While Toshiba had been able to enjoy a good amount of early success, the BluRay was nearing the market and the possible future of the HD DVD was in question. While the HD DVD was a serious leap forward over the DVD, the BluRay was not as significant to the evolution of home video however it did offer more space than the HD DVD. The best advantage was it’s parent. Sony had established itself in the film industry as a significant player and therefore it’s home videos were in huge demand. However, having charge of it’s movies, they weren’t for sale on HD DVD but BluRay instead and in doing so Sony had forced some home theater lovers to simply accept the BluRay format as the media choice above others.

So, with the BluRay claiming victory in the home theater market and Toshiba dropping support of their product, we now see the spot that the DVD has gone. It went from a little known and hardly embraced format and gave birth to an entirely new era of digital media that most of us have come to love and enjoy. Just as we’re looking back at the DVD 10 years after its domination of the home theater, perhaps in the next 10 years we will see the birth of a new era of home entertainment to enjoy and embrace.
