Windows 7: Strong Security?

Microsoft suggests that its latest creation, Windows 7, is not just nicer to look at, but is the most secure desktop Operating System ever created. Is this an exaggerated marketing mantra or does it have any substance? In truth there are some impressive security enhancements built into Windows 7 that go some way to substantiating the claim.
1. Microsoft has strengthened the foundation by developing kernel level protection which prevents unauthorised access to the heart of the operting system. In addition is has developed Data Execution Prevention and Address Space Layer Randomization, two further methodologies that prevent malware attacks at a low level.
2. User Account Control (UAC) is the security feature that was born in Vista and has come of age in Windows 7. In vista these nagging UAC pop-ups were tiresome but they did help in the battle against malware. In Windows 7 a slider control allows you to contol the level of protection for access to files and therefore the user can strike their own balance of security versus useability.
3. Windows 7 comes with Internet Explorer 8. The headline feature here is ‘protected mode’. This relies on various security features of Windows 7 to prevent malicious code from running in the browser.
4. Managing security features & settings has become far simpler with Windows 7. Out goes Windows Security Center and welcome to the new Windows ‘Action Center’. This displays lots of information regarding the status of various security components at a glance: firewall, antispyware status, and virus protection. It also keeps you up to date on the status of Windows Updates, Internet security settings, & User Account Control settings.
Windows 7 brings with it a number of welcome security enhancements. Its certainly more secure ‘out of the box’ than any of its predecessors & this is a good thing. These improvements come at a time of increasing security threats online and will be welcomed by computer users.

The Basics Of Computer Backup Software

In the technology world, a backup defines making copies of data so original copies of the data can be restored in an event of a loss. Computer data backup is necessary to ensure having a save backup in case of an incident with a users hard drive or a servers drive.
Data can include important documents, spreadsheets and any other type of digital files that are stored on computer systems. A good backup software that will handle the backups for the users of the system is the most essential piece for creating backups.
The backup industry is offering both local or network software backup programs that can backup the data or offline backup possibilities which means that the data will be stored on servers on the Internet. There are three basic ways of how backup software programs operate.
Unstructured backups are the first method. This usually consists of backing up data on removable storage devices like floppy disks, CD-R or DVD-R media, thumb drives or flash drives. The data is backed up regularly on those devices and it is probably the easiest method of creating backups. It is however not the best for attaining a full system recovery.
Incremental backups are the second possibility. They usually refer to the process of creating a full data backup during the first run and then incremental backups afterwards. These can be scheduled so that they are created at times when no user is working on the systems.
The main benefit of incremental backups is that only data that has been changed needs to be backed up. This can save lots of time and storage space as it usually means that only a fraction of the data has to be backed up on a regular basis.
The final option are continuous or real time backups. This puts the highest strain on the computer architecture but is the most secure and reliable option. The computer systems are constantly monitored by the backup software and a backup is created whenever data changes on the storage devices.
The real time backup makes it possible to access any version of a document or file that has ever been created on the computer system. This makes it possible for any user or administrator to access previous work copies of files in case the need arises.
