Yahoo Fighting To Keep It’s Name And Its Reputation

February 17th, 2010

These days Yahoo is fighting to maintain its reputation as one of the tech leaders on the web. For many years, this company has bounced back and forth not sure whether to focus on the technical aspects or the media aspects of their internet business, they have recently sold off some of their media tools to Microsoft. And while to some that this may seem like the company is giving up the ghost, they have truly just decided to put their main focus on the technical aspects of their company.

For a while it seemed lime Microsoft may even take over Yahoo. Microsoft did make an offer to Yahoo to acquire the company, but Yahoo eventually refused. Now Yahoo is hoping that by returning their focus to improving their search engine, they can help restore the reputation of the company as well.

Well, according to the company itself they plan on creating a new line of innovative products that will in fact revolutionize the web. They are actually working on creating a better search, with more effective relevant results and they believe that their technical analysts are up to the challenge, even though this has been attempted by Bing and Google in the past, Yahoo feels that this step is just on the horizon for them and that they have the tools to make it successful.

Their strategy is to offer a long tail of relevant content for each search using classifications of places, people, and products to help draw in only relevant search results, something that Bing has become more successful at than even super giant Google. Yahoo feels that they can corner the market if they can further narrow down search results to relevant content.

The question for Yahoo now is how quickly they can develop and implement these changes, and if they will be able to bring users back into the fold once this improved search engine is released. Yahoo believes that this effort will be a success, and that the company will return to its former prominence, but only time will tell.

Google Continues To Dominate The Market

January 28th, 2010

Everybody knows Google. In almost every country in the world Google is known for being one of the biggest search engine providers, if not the biggest. For most companies this would be an extraordinary accomplishment, but not for Google. Google is now in the process of expanding their dominance to include mobile searching.

Google’s primary source of competition for searching the internet on a mobile device, is another giant in the computer industry, Apple. In order to increase their market share, and acquire new technology, Google has just taken over AdMob and Teracent at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. Google believes that by acquiring these companies, and increasing their exposure in the mobile web arena, that they will be able to generate more advertising revenue.

Apple is also fighting hard to gain this market with their acquisition of Quattro; they will attempt to make headway in the mobile marketing arena as well. The question is really, “how much ground can Apple gain from Google, who already has about 70% of the search traffic on the web?”

Every other search engine company has one primary goal right now, and that is how to take a piece of Google’s overwhelming market share. These competitors are being forced to come up with new ideas to compete with Google, including, in some cases, working together to take on Google. The latest discussions of a collaboration between Google’s competitors center around Microsoft and Apple, competitors themselves, working together to increase their position in the mobile search engine market. Apple is considering incorporating Microsoft’s Bing search engine into the iPhone, which would be a significant blow to Google’s drive to be the number one mobile search engine provider.

The focus for Google is now increasing their position in the mobile search engine market, however this will not come at the expense of their PC search engine. Google is the dominant search engine on the internet, and while it would be an accomplishment if they were to achieve their mobile goals, the reality is that if they fail to meet these goals it would not have much of an impact on their standing as it compares to the other search engines. While their competition continues to figure out how to solve the problem of Google, Google continues to be the most used search engine on the web.

Optimizing The Content On Your Business Web Page

January 13th, 2010

When search engines, like Google or Yahoo, rank a web site for their results list, one of the most important factors in that ranking is the content on the site. This, unfortunately, may not make sense for some business, since the products or services being offered do not lend themselves to a great deal of content. For most businesses, though, this is not the case and the more content they can provide for their customers the better. In order to optimize your business web site you need to constantly update the site with new, relevant data. Below are some types of content that you may want to consider adding to your business web site, to help optimize your search engine rankings.

If your business is growing, and constantly adding new products or services, then you should definitely consider adding a blog to your web site. Blogs are a great way to communicate with your customers about all of the things going on in your business, what is coming up down the road, and what new products or services you have available right now.

If your business is in a popular field, and there are articles being written about your business, your industry, or the products or services you provide, then you should include these articles on your web site. When you add the articles make sure you use the proper key words to categorize them, and keep them updated so your customers have the latest and best information.

Allow your customers to write reviews, rate your products, leave suggestions, or provide any other type of feedback. This will allow them to have input into your business, and can provide references for new or potential customers who are looking for what others think about your company.

If you have business affiliates you should include a section on your web site with information related to these affiliates, and links to their web sites. Again the more information you can provide about your business and industry the higher your search engine ranking will be, and if your affiliates include information and a link to your web site from theirs, you will be helping each other by directing potential customers to the sites.

These are just some helpful tips when you are considering what content to include on your business web site. The more content you provide related to your business, your industry, your products or your services, the higher your search engine rankings will be. The higher your ranking the higher up your web site will be on the search engine results list, which should translate into more visitors to your site, and hopefully more business for your company.
