Using a Humidor

December 30th, 2009

If there is one very common question posed by those who enjoy buying and smoking high-quality cigars it is “Do you remove the plastic wrapper when storing in a humidor?” Unfortunately, this is a question that doesn’t have an authoritative answer. Many experts would simply reply that it is a matter of preference, but there are some benefits in choosing to use the humidor AND leaving the cigars in their wrappers while inside the well controlled environment.

What sorts of items can cigar enthusiasts use? Well, there is one item that all people who regularly purchase cigars and tobacco products can use - the humidor. This is a container that ensures the cigars receive the proper amount of humidity and air circulation that prevents them from going stale or drying out and becoming unusable. There are large and small humidors, and even special humidity monitors to ensure that conditions are always at optimal levels. Purchasing a nice humidor along with an additional humidity gauge is a wonderful way to help an enthusiast to enjoy their cigar experiences.

One thing that all enthusiasts wonder is if they should leave their gourmet cigars in the special wrappers in which they arrive when they place them inside of their humidors. Well, this can be answered quite simply - yes. Though there is much debate on the issue, most experts agree that the wrappers can reduce the occurrence of flavor mixing that is a problem with unwrapped cigars, and the wrappers can also help the special cigar cutters to remain sharper and cleaner too.

Here too is another item to consider when looking for gifts or accessories for a cigar enthusiast. A good cutter is going to expose the body of the cigar to the flame of the lighter, and if the cigar remains in its wrapper the entire cutting process will be cleaner and easier. Cutters can be very basic and simple, or they can be somewhat elaborate and highly decorative too. They are among the most frequently used items by cigar smokers, and are in fact an absolute necessity.

This all adds up to a somewhat clear-cut answer, which is to opt for leaving the cigar in its original cellophane wrapper whether it remains in the box in which it was purchased or in a climate controlled environment instead.

Styles and Sizes of Cigars

December 19th, 2009

Any cigar smoker has seen a wide variety of cigar styles and sizes, whether they have first-hand experience or have simply peeked into the window of a tobacco shop. Size and style of cigar greatly determine what kind of smoking experience you will have. As an example, taste will be one factor determined by the style and size of your cigar as will the smoke temperature that results as you draw and puff the cigar. Have a little knowledge regarding the variety of styles and sizes of cigars can greatly enhance the experience you have a cigar smoker.

Variations in Style

Cylindrical - The most common cigar style is the cylindrical tube. These are usually the easiest to make and provide even airflow through the cigar’s body. The cap on these is usually rounded. Most cigar manufacturers offer this style of cigar.

Torpedo - The torpedo is the second cigar style type and are less common than cylindrical cigars. Thanks to the tapered end, they provide a more direct flow of air through the cigar body. The shape of the torpedo utilizes a funnel end that is generally located at the cap (the head), although some cigar makers place it at the lit end (foot).

Size Variations

Knowing about how the size of a cigar affects the smoking experience can be very useful to know. The size of the cigar selected will determine several factors in regards to the experience of the cigar.

Length - Longer cigars are usually preferable, simply because they provide a much cooler smoke and greater enjoyment. They are also usually smoother tasting and lack the harshness associated with shorter cigars.

Diameter - The diameter of your cigar (the ring gauge) also plays an important role. The thinner the cigar, the faster it will burn and the harsher the smoke will be. Conversely, the wider the cigar, the slower the burn and the smoother the smoke you enjoy.

Remember, also, before you contemplate using your lighter to set your cigar smoldering, longer, fatter cigars are often the most expensive. This is because it takes longer leaves and more of them to create the cigar. In essence, you’re paying more because you’re getting more.

Single Action Cigar Lighter Technology

December 2nd, 2009

High-quality cigar lighters such as Lotus lighters oftentimes come with many convenient additions. Many are equipped with cigar cutters and other tools. Double and triple jets provide reliable lighting under any conditions. These lighters come in another form that makes them even easier to use. If one is tired of having to flip their lid every time they light up a cigar, a single action lighter may be the answer. These are among the most convenient of lighters.

Many lighters have a lid of one sort or another built into them to protect the components. Most often, the lid is flipped open and the lighter is lit. In a single action lighter with a lid, one need only push the button. The entire lighting process, from sliding back the lid to starting the flow of gas to producing the spark is done with one press of the button. This can be quite an advantage.

Single action lighters are excellent choices for those who have trouble performing very fine tasks with their hands. Individuals who suffer from arthritis, for instance, will likely appreciate the convenience of being able to spark their lighter with the press of a single phone. High-end lighters are manufactured with high-quality components which ensure that the single action is not a technical advantage soon to become broken or compromised.

Many of the lids on lighters of this sort simply slide aside rather than flipping open. The latter models do exist. Usually, one can opt to manually flip the lighter open, should they prefer. Either way, the availability of the single action opening function is handy and makes the lighter a bit more interesting and impressive than it might otherwise be. These lighters are almost universally butane models as fluid-filled lighters use a spark wheel, not a standard button, to ignite the fuel on the wick.

Single action lighters can usually be opened manually should the user prefer. Having the option is nice, however, especially if one has their hands full when they’re trying to light a cigar. These lighters are made of high-quality components so users should not take the complexity as presenting an increased risk of the lighter breaking. These devices are also available in a wide variety of case styles that should suit any user’s preferences in that regard. Most high-quality lighter stores will have several of these models available to their customers.
