The Whales Worst Enemy Is Man
November 29th, 2009
Whales belong to their own family order which there are many species of Cetaceans and this order includes the whale, porpoises and dolphins. There are sixty six species of toothed species and there are only a few species of Baleen whales. Tooted species are predators that feed on squid and marine mammals by swallowing them whole. They also use echolocation to hunt and have one blow hole.
Baleens on the other hand have a comb like structure which filters the creatures food from the water. The species of whale is much larger than the toothed species is also a predator and has two blow holes. And the largest of the ocean mammals as well as the largest mammal on earth is the blue whale which grows to around twenty nine meters long. The blue whale consumes four tons of tiny krill a day. The blue whale has a fatal enemy called man.
And the tiniest of the whale species is the dwarf sperm whale as this species only reaches lengths of around two to two and half meters in length. Whales fall under the category of mammals even though they are sea creatures. These creatures have a very high IQ and are also very large mammals.
It is essential for a whale to breathe air into their lungs and they are no different to land mammals in that respect and the way they do this is through their blow holes. These creatures are warm blooded so they feel pain and they are also capable of regulating their body temperature and the same as other mammals have a heart with four chambers. The calves suckle on their mothers.
The killer whale as well as the short fin pilot whale swim withgreat speeds and can reach around forty eight kilometres ph. These majesic creatures display a lot of activity in the ocean some jump extremely high out of the water and they are also known to surface their heads in order to have a look around.
Many of the whales are now on the critically endangered list and these ocean mammals worst enemy is man. Should man continue to hunt these creatures they will surely cause these mammals to become extinct in the very near future.
While living on the Eastern coast of Australia and watching whales Anne Stark has always marvelled at how whales communicate.
