The Canaries - Islands of the Dogs

August 22nd, 2009

by Mandy Kimber

The Canaries are a group of seven volcanic islands off the Atlantic coast of North Africa. The islands cover a total area of 7,450 sq km (2,900 sq ml) boasting some of the world’s most dramatic scenery. Each island has its own individual landscape and flora and fauna, ranging from the desert of Fuerteventura to the lush mountainous forest of La Gomera. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the cosmopolitan capital of the archipelago, reputed to have the best climate in the world.

The name Islas Canarias is likely derived from the Latin term Insula Canaria, meaning “Island of the Dogs”. It is speculated that the so called dogs were actually a species of Monk Seals which are now extinct.

The Spanish first occupied the Canaries in 1402, but it took the better part of a century to gain complete control of this strategic point on the Atlantic trade route. For the next 300 years, the islands grew increasingly rich from trading profits until, in the 19th century, a recession led to mass emigration to America. The development of the tourist industry eventually turned the tide and today, around 10 million tourists visit the islands every year.

Tenerife, the largest island, has the most varied scenery. It has a landscape of fertile valleys, steep cliffs and wide sandy beaches dominated by the towering outline of El Teide, the third largest volcano on earth at 3,718 m (12,195 ft) high. La Palma, the green island’, has the world’s largest volcanic crater, La Caldera del Taburiente with a diameter of 9 km (6 ml) and a depth of 770 m (2,525 ft).

The smallest island, Hierro is also the rockiest with a dramatic coastline plunging straight into the sea. Lanzarote is the most extraordinary of all. It boasts a surreal volcanic landscape of petrified lava from 18th and 19th century eruptions. The stark beauty of its eerily empty scenery, dotted with ancient vineyards, brilliant coloured flowers and sparkling white houses is unlike anywhere else on the planet. Visiting these islands is a truly memorable experience.

Many brides and grooms choose the honeymoon destination together. It is one of the wedding planning items that the groom has no problem participating. Talking about and planning your honeymoon can be a great stress reliever during an otherwise busy and stressful time.

Caneel Bay is a great spot for a honeymoon or a romantic getaway. It is located in St. John Bay in the U.S. Virgin Islands and can best be described as a luxury resort. This is certainly the place to go if you are looking for a nice relaxing and romantic honeymoon after all that wedding planning stress!

If you are looking for a honeymoon resort that offers a balance of relaxation possibilities, activities and a romantic atmosphere Caneel Bay is your choice. They have seven different beaches, plenty of activities to participate in not to mention fabulous rooms to stay in.

Once you arrive at the island you will be greeted by someone to pick you up and take you to your accommodations. With them they will have a complimentary bottle of island rum. Once you are settled in you might want to think about participating in some of the water activities available like fishing, snorkeling, kayaking or seeing an underwater slideshow.

Of course you can also just spend countless hours at the beach, sunbathing in the beautiful weather where you can enjoy the view of white sand and tranquil water. You can enjoy a good book, good company or have a drink or something to eat with the one you love. Of course you can discover your inner child while you are on vacation away from the big city and build a sand castle or two.

If you are looking for some down time which does not include the beach, don’t worry you can have some of that too. You can enjoy drinks at the bar, nice dinners and participate in activities which don’t involve the beach such as art lessons or tennis lessons.

Interior Design Expertise Makes All The Difference In The World

August 22nd, 2009

by Janice Nickole

Have you finally found your dream home and now wonder how you will incorporate the “WOW” factor into it? Well, like many people I’ve consulted with, your first step is to hire an Interior Designer.

Why is it necessary to consider hiring a professional Interior Designer? Simply, because most of us do not have the expertise or lack the skill that it takes to decorate and design. You could end up spending more money on costly mistakes.

An Interior Designer can take one simple idea and bring your design dreams to fruition. They will open up an entire world of art, color and style to you that you would have never thought or dreamed of.

But not just any Interior Designer will do. You’ve got to hire the right designer; one you feel will represent you to the best of their knowledge. A designer you can trust, and one that will actually listen closely to your desires and intents.

As an Interior Designer practicing for over twenty years now, I find this to be the absolute most important consideration when deciding on which designer to hire.

First thing you will want to do is visit with your designer before hiring him or her. You can interview ten designers and get ten different design concepts of course. But will all ten designers deliver exactly what you want?

You’ll notice many personality types but I’m sure you’ll find one that you feel is on the “same page” as you. You should feel comfortable in the fact that your designer listens to your desires and goals.

You’ll also want to ask your designer about his or her design background, and projects they have completed. It’s really not about how many years they’ve been in business, but if they are confident and professional in their abilities.

Interior Designers are also a valuable resource because they partner with the best vendors to get the job done right. It’s just as important to know who to go to as well as who “not” to go to in the industry.

Janice Nickole is a practicing Interior Designer in Phoenix Arizona. See why it is possible to have a beautiful interior without having to pay enormously high design fees by visiting her website.
