What Is Portrait Photography?
April 25th, 2009
A portrait, also known as a portraiture, is a photo centering on a person or small groups facial expression while they are in a still position. The personality, mood and likeness of the person or group will be presented. You can also include the whole body and background in portrait photography as well. When taking a portrait photo the person or group is generally looking strait at the camera.
Unlike other styles of photography, portrait photography doesn’t usually include models. Graduations, special events and weddings are types of occasions where portrait photography is used, and later displayed in private homes.
A Bit of History
People have been using portrait photography ever since the camera was invented. It was, and is more inexpensive way then having your portrait painted and it is a more available method. People would sit against a background and were lit with natural light from a window. Portrait photography can now be more creative with the way technology has evolve since they can adjust light and move around more.
Methods of Light
Portrait photographs can be done in a studio where the photographer can adjust the light when capturing portraits. They can change the direction and the intensity. Different lighting terms are kicker lights, fill lights, background lights and the main light. The most important light source is obviously referred to the main light. The main light is generally positioned above or below the subject and at a 45 degree angle. The fill light is used to help eliminate shadows that are created by the main light. The light that brightens up the hair of the subject is the kicker light. This will help to add depth and to show the separation from the subject and the background. To add effects to the backdrops the background light is used to brighten up the background.

Why Are You Giving Up Your Dreams?
February 20th, 2009
If you were a professional photographer, working every day at a job you love, how would your life change? Would a career making beautiful images make your dreams come true?
Well, if you aren’t making any money as a professional photographer, what’s holding you back?
If you are like most of us artists, you have a fairly low sense of your photo abilities. We tend to be afraid our work won’t “measure up” and we may even be laughed at. We tend to compare ourselves to the top pros working for the top magazines. Or, those astounding photo contest winners we see that take our breath away. We just know we could never compete with THAT, and so we give up our dreams and return to our everyday dream destroying, soul killing lives.
Big mistake!
Those images are rarely, if ever, an example of the day in and day out images of a working professional. They’re usually once in a lifetime shots - and YOU are comparing your day in and day out abilities to THAT! Bad move.
Have you ever gone to the local mall and after gazing through the window of one of the photo studios, (watching the photographer work) thought to yourself “I could do that!” Know what? You probably could.
Really, ignore the beanie with the propeller on top and take a close look at the photographer. Usually they are just high school or college kids, still living at home and working part time to pick up a few extra bucks for spending loot! There’s no special training or talent there. Typically the store manager spent a couple hours showing them some easy poses and turned them loose.
Did their amazing photo knowledge or portfolio get them the job? Nope. They usually either got the job through a friend or filled out an application at every store in the mall.
In other words, they got the job of YOUR dreams, by sheer luck. They got the job of your dreams, the one that you always felt was out of your reach!
I once spent a little time talking to one of the managers of a mall baby portrait studio. (This was several years ago and I can only hope that the standards are higher now.) She’d been the store manager for 3 years. I asked her what type of camera she used and SHE DIDN’T KNOW! The camera was there when she got her job and she had never bothered to check the brand name. I asked what her favorite lighting pattern was - turns out the lights are permanently attached to the wall! She can’t change them. (I guess one lighting setup fits all.)
I can hear the mad rustling of paper as all you mall shooters scramble to write me some hate mail. Don’t bother. I’m sure that many of you are knowledgeable, caring and do a terrific job. That wasn’t my point. The point is; you don’t have to be the reincarnation of Ansel Adams to make a decent living as a photographer. People mostly buy a few basic poses. Learn to create and shoot them and you are on the way. It’s that easy.
You can be a photographer and starting your OWN photo business is actually easier than working for someone else. Just learn the basic lighting and poses, then learn a few time tested and proven marketing strategies, ones that will pull eager clients into your studio (actually, you don’t even need a studio) and you are in the business of your dreams.I believe anyone interested in photography can learn to be making money with their camera within two weeks! By anyone, I mean YOU. Check out my website, the links are in the resources box.

Host Your Images For Free At Speedimg.com
December 12th, 2008
Free image hosting is big business, and the people behind them must be making money from them or they simply wouldnt be in business, as they use alot of storage space and bandwidth each month. They make money from advertising on the website and through programs like google adsense.
There are many things you can do to benefit from using a free image hosting website like www.speedimg.com. You could easily start your own website selling screensavers, wallpapers and more.
You can easily upload your photos and also delve into other associated facilities such as wall papers, screen savers and slideshows.
Through free image hosting services, you can also look forward to sending your images in print to loved ones. The print would easily surpass those made through average ink-jet printers. Few photo hosting sites offer Canon- print images. In all cases, the prints come very nominally.
Uploading images to a free image hosting website is very easy to do. You simply choose the image on your harddrive and press the upload button on the image hosting website. The uploading takes mere seconds to complete, and then your presented with a series of links for the displaying of your photos on forum posts, website/blogs and more.
If you are curious to know about the process of uploading an image on the web, you mustl be aware that it is a user-friendly concept. First, you need to choose an image that you would like to host. Next, you need to click on “Upload Images” to transfer the file to an image hosting server. Once this is done, the uploading process is automatically completed and you are eligible to get pasting codes for your blog or social networking sites like MySpace.
Link building through the free image hosting sites is very easy to do. Your photos will then be showed on the social networking websites and also online auctions. Custom generator facilities can let you upgrade your text, change it partially or completely, add a certain background, and on the whole completely morph your photos.
The free image hosting websites have alot of stats available to customers, like how many times your picture has been viewed, who has downloaded your photo and much more
Free image hosting sites may also offer editing tools through which it is possible to resize and change your photos.
Theres no reason now why you cant send photos to your loved ones or friends around the world now.

How To Turn Your Computer into A Clipboard
November 18th, 2008
There’s an interesting new website now available that lets you clip URL links, text, photos, videos or essentially anything that has a file to a website and then open them in a different place, time, and setting. It’s called cl1p.net and it’s quite useful when trying to save stuff for later.
