Wireless Photo Printer Tips: How to Save on Ink

The paper and ink cost can easily outstrip the initial cost of a wireless photo printer. Therefore, you should look past the cost of the actual printer and see the cost of printing pictures.

Do the following to save costs on your wireless photo printer:

Raise the Resolution: Take a picture with at least 1 megapixel of data per shot. Most of today’s cameras will do that at a minimum. But, if you want really good quality, take the shot at 2 megapixels.

Adjust your camera to its highest resolution when taking shots that you might want to print.

Save Your Originals: Don’t compress images into JPEGs or other compressed file formats.

Enhance the Image: Experiment with your image-editing program’s functions such as cropping, contrast, brightness, and other controls until you’re entirely satisfied with the image’s composition.

Plan Your Print Drafts: If you plan to make test prints that you will discard later, reduce the image size and load the printer with plain inexpensive paper.

If you are going to print 4 x 6 inch images, use matte-finish photo cards instead of glossy photo paper.

Saving on ink: Special photo inks are available which both save you money and provide a more refined color palette.

In some cases, photos printed using general-purpose cartridges look almost as good as ones printed using photo ink.

Time to Align: Aligning your cartridge is a valuable step for those who want to save on ink costs. This is especially important to do if you see vertical or horizontal bands, gaps, bleeding colors, or unwanted lines in your prints. You align your cartridge by going to the control panel and clicking on “Printers.” Then Choose the “Printers and Faxes” or “Printers” applet. Finally, click on “properties and search for the “Cartridge Maintenance” option.

Practice Good Housekeeping: By keeping your printer’s mechanisms clean, you will ensure that the device runs at its best.

Keep the ink nozzles clear of dry ink. When you leave an inkjet printer idle for even a week, the ink in the tiny tubes that feed the nozzles begin to dry. If you are printing for the first time in a few days, wipe the nozzels down first.
